This is the graduation exhibition held in 2021 at the Department of Visual Design, Hongik University. The work explores the concept of object authenticity, inspired by my own realization of being content with simply owning images of artworks by taking photos at museums. The work raises the following questions: What makes an object truly "itself"? Is it its form or its function? Can a replica, transcending its role and status as a copy, become a new original that is closer to the essence of the original than the original itself? After the graduation exhibition, this work was recommended and exhibited at the 2022 College Students' Best Graduation Works Exhibition, hosted by the Korea Design Association. About the project
Objects in museums are static. These items, once used for their intended purpose, have been collected and are now displayed in museums, existing only in their form, having lost their original function. In contrast, here OOOOOOriginal was replicated solely for its exterior and form, and through this act of reproduction, it has become a new original. The new originals created in this way are printed onto simple geometric shapes—cubes—and, in the real world, they now possess size and volume. Paradoxically, unlike the original objects displayed in museums, these newly replicated originals perform or recreate the function of the object itself. So, what is closer to the essence of the object? Is it the original that has lost its function but retains perfect form? Or is it the OOOOOOriginal, which has been replicated and transformed, but still retains its function?
박물관의 물건들은 멈춰있다. 본래 쓰임이 있던 이 물건들은 누군가에 의해 수집되어 오늘날 박물관에 전시되었고, 기능을 잃은 채 형태로만 존재하고 있다. 반대로 여기 <원원원원원원본>은 오직 외관, 형태의 아름다움에 매료되어 복제되었고, 이 복제에 의한 파생 행위로 새로운 원본이 되었다. 이렇게 만들어진 새로운 원본들은 가장 단순한 입체물인 육면체에 인쇄되어 실제 세상에서 크기와 부피를 가지게 되었다. 역설적이게도 이 복제된 새로운 원본들은 박물관에 전시된 원본들과는 달리, 그 물체 본래의 기능을 수행 혹은 재현하고 있다. 그렇다면 본 물체에 더 가까운 것은 무엇일까? 기능을 잃었지만 형태가 완벽한 원본인가. 아니면 복제되고 변형된 형태지만 기능을 잊지 않은 <원원원원원원본>인가?
